There are a lot of options and variations, and much of our stuff can be configured in more than one way.
Ivan S: I think we spoke about this once before, but why is it so hard to break the convention of multiple wedges for a single performer?
It would make sense that using a single floor wedge would reduce polar anomalies and therefore maximize gain before feedback.
Dave Rat: Absolutely! And we attempted that with reasonable success with the L wedge. At Coachella, Janes Addiction had a single L wedge on both Dave Navarro and Martyn.
I think it comes down to coverage and perception. Perception is the main dilemna. I put a lot of time into the Microwedge design, and realizing that wedge pairs are not going away soon, I really focused on getting them to be able to function in pairs. There is an advantage to that stereo sound of two properly spaced wedges, combined with the increased coverage realized by the pair.
Moderator: How do you position a single wedge when using a hypercardioid mic with a lobe at 180 degrees?
Dave Rat: The lobe is directly behind the mic, so assuming you have a fixed (on a stand) mic, tilting the mic angle can help get the monitor out of the rear pick up pattern. If the artist pics up the mic, all bets are off and the rear lobes of the various mics are all gonna catch the wedge sooner or later, so dead center would be the answer.
Moderator: I am going back to a follow-up amplifier question.
Lee Brenkman: Is that 4 channel Chevin amp for the horns only or for the woofer too, on the Microwedges?
Dave Rat: Horns only, we are building 8 space/4 mix amp racks with 2 7001's and 1 Chevin and an x-over.
We are contemplating building a Powerlight or Chevin 2 mix version as the Microwedge 12's are designed to be small and light enough to fly as excess baggage on commercial flights in an ultra-light case. These would be the complemtary amp racks.
Craig Montgomery: Are the rumors true that you're running your tweets on an aux? I don't remember that.
Dave Rat: Yes, the Rat 5 systems are all configured now with
"tweets on an aux" as an option. The 2" now go all the way out and the tweets can be tied to the L and R or a stereo aux. I personally mix with them on an aux and really enjoy it, it gets all that cymbal wash
out of the highs while still allowing the system to be sparkley up top.
I only run OH, HH and lead vocal to them, and turn them down on loud songs and up on quite ones.
